History is about to be made with the christening of a new honorary day in the city of Brandon.

Though Brandon is the 2nd largest city in the Canadian province of Manitoba, it's population is moderate at roughly 60,000, it's most notable figures are ice hockey players.

Brandon's Sikh community approached City Mayor Rich Chrest about something that is very important for Sikhs this year: the 400th celebration of the Prakash of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib who incarnated in the year 1621.

The representation was successful and the Mayor signed the following proclamation (image at bottom)

City of Brandon Proclamation
WHEREAS Guru Tegh Bahadur was a strong advocate for the democratic and civil rights of people and a leader of the Sikh community; and,
WHEREAS This year marks the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Each year it is commemorated by Sikhs and Human Rights activists across the world in memory of Guru Tegh Bahadur, recognizing his commitment to the pursuit of Human Rights; and,
WHEREAS Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life for the Human Rights and dignity of humankind. This birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur would present an opportunity to recognize and raise awareness about Human Rights violations around the world; and,
WHEREAS The City of Brandon honors the SIkh history and culture, Guru Tegh Bahadur's place in South Asian history, and the City's valued relationship with the Sikh Community.
Now, therefore, I, Rich Chrest, Mayor of the City of Brandon, in the Province of Manitoba, DO HEREBY proclaim April 1, 2021 to be
"GURU TEGH BAHADUR DAY"
in the City of Brandon

There are only so many characters in history who can be said to have martyred themself for humanity itself. On top of congratulating the Brandon Sikh community for this appropriate proclamation may this be an inspiration for many more such official recognitions of the protector of humanity: Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib!
