This week Khalsa Foundation proudly announced the launch of the long-awaited book written by Bhai Manvir Singh Khalsa. The book presents research from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Dasam Granth, writings of Bhai Gurdas Ji, historical Rehatnamas and Hukamnamas on the topic of Sikh way of life and traditions.

The 388-page hardcover book, called ‘The Sikh Rehat Maryada: History, Guiding Principles, and a Contextual Translation’. The book provides a fresh modern contextual English translation of the original Sikh Rehat Maryada document, and a detailed analysis of all changes and amendments that have been made to this document since it was written. The document known as ‘the Sikh Rehat Maryada’ has been used as an official reference point for Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and other major Sikh institutions for over 80 years.

The book explores how the Panth’s Rehat Maryada was formed and updates the old English translations into more modern English translations. It also contains a copy of the original Sikh Rehat Maryada and the most up-to-date published by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) so readers can see the Punjabi versions.

Bhai Parmvir Singh of Khalsa Foundation UK said, “This book is the product of years and years of research and analysis by Bhai Manvir Singh. Khalsa Foundation feel exceptionally honoured to be part of this fantastic project which will help Sikhs of today better understand the historic and scriptural roots to the Khalsa code of discipline.”

US military veteran, Brian Harris, who is founder of SouthernSikh.com writes in a message at the beginning of the book, “Bhai Manvir Singh has written a true gem, especially for those of us that have started following the Sikh path after being raised in another faith or started our journey into Sikhi later in life…”

Professor Eleanor Nesbitt from University of Warwick, in commenting about the book writes, “Thank you, Manvir Singh, for this outstanding, bilingual gift to the Panth and to everyone with an interest in the Sikh Code of Conduct. The text and translation of Sikh Rehat Maryada are richly contextualised by quotations from earlier sources, plus being supplemented by the text of more recent rulings, and the presentation is crystal clear.”

Bhai Manpreet Singh, General Secretary of the World Sikh Parliament, during a book launch event said, “This book by Bhai Manvir Singh is a thoughtful and research based text, a progressive Sikh Rehat Maryada guidebook designed to help Sikh generations understand and the follow the key tenets of Sikh way of life, citing historical evidences and findings.” He added, “It’s a must read for all practicing Sikhs and those aspiring to walk the Sikhi path.”
