SERVING THE FORGOTTEN SIKHS DURING A NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN
For years, SAF International has been working within Sikligar communities, helping to educate and uplift individuals that have been ignored and neglected by mainstream society. It’s a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts, because we know their story, their rich history, and the unimaginable hardships they have endured over the years.
The lasting impact of these hardships and the “criminal” tag given to the Sikligar community has held them back for decades and has stripped them of their basic human rights. As a Sikh based charity, we felt that we had no option but to help out in any way that we could.
Several years ago, we decided to kick-start a community development project for Sikligar Sikhs. The program initially served communities in Madhya Pradesh and has since grown to include communities within Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Within these communities, we have been providing access to education for young children, Gurmat academies, water filters, and basic home improvements.
During this year’s global COVID-19 pandemic, we stepped up our support to help Sikligar communities during India’s nationwide lockdown. While the lockdown was necessary, it left many Sikligar Sikhs in an incredibly dangerous position.
As you may or may not know, Sikligar Sikhs are a community renowned for their craftsmanship and their involvement in the establishment of the Khalsa. For many within the community, their skilled handy work is their one and only source of income to feed their families.
Without access to sell their handmade items on the streets of India, they have no means of supporting themselves and their loved ones. Additionally, many if not all families have no savings because they have not been properly educated on how to save money/supplies for emergencies. This has left entire communities with very little to survive off of during the Coronavirus pandemic.
With no income and almost no savings, alongside the threat of potential police beatings if they were to leave their house, many Sikligar Sikhs were left with no option but to go hungry.
Fortunately, SAF International was able to lend a hand. We started a fundraising campaign for the Sikligar Sikhs, and within days we were able to get essential food supplies to families in need. To date, we have delivered over 12 tonnes of food including rice, dal, oil, haldi, mirch, salt and more to hundreds of families within the Sikligar communities we support.
Here is a quick overview of our aid deployment:
- 41 Families in Vadodara, Gujarat
- 60 Families in Pachori, Madhya Pradesh
- 20 Families in Miryalaguda, Hyderabad
- 40 Families in Surat, Gujarat
- 26 Families in Satwas, Madhya Pradesh
- 4 Families in Bagali, Madhya Pradesh
- 10 Families in Kalapatha, Madhya Pradesh
- 55 Families in Akash Nagar, Madhya Pradesh
Delivering such a large amount of food across these communities during a nationwide lockdown has proved to be challenging at times, but it was something that needed to be done, and we’re incredibly proud of everyone involved for making it possible. Thanks to their selfless service and the generous donations from within the Sikh community, many lives have been saved.
Our work in the area is far from over and we plan to support the Sikligar Sikhs throughout the lockdown and beyond. To do that, we need as much support as possible.

ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੈਫ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਲਾਈ ਕਈ ਕਾਰਜ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਸਮਾਜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅੱਖੋਂ ਪਰੋਖੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਲਈ ਸੈਫ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉੱਦਮ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਲਈ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤਿ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਰਬਤ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਜੀਅ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ‘ਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਾਇਆ ਜਰਾਇਮ ਪੇਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਕਲੰਕ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਬਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਝੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇੱਕ ਸਮਾਜ਼ ਸੇਵੀ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਤੇ ਸਾਡਾ ਫਰਜ਼ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਹਰ ਹੀਲੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੱਦਦ ਕਰੀਏ।
ਕਈ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਅਸੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟ ਆਰੰਭਿਆ ਸੀ। ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਆਰੰਭੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਗੁਜਰਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਆਂਧਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੇਂਦਰ, ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਫਿਲਟਰ ਅਤੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੋਰ ਮੁੱਢਲੀਆਂ ਜਰੂਰਤਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲੀ ਕਰੋਨਾ ਮਹਾਂਮਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੌਕਡਾਉਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਅਸੀਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਮੱਦਦ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲ ਕਦਮੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਅ ਲਈ ਲੌਕ ਡਾਉਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਈ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਹਾਲਤ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਤੁਸੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਲੋਹਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ ਦੀ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਜਦੋ-ਜਹਿਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਮੁਹਾਰਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਰੀਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਪਾਣੇ ਹੱਥੀ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੌਕ ਡਾਉਨ ਹੋਣ ਕਰੇ ਉਹ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀ ਵੇਚ ਸਕਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋ ਵੇਲੇ ਢਿੱਡ ਭਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਜਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੁੰਜੀ ਵੀ ਨਹੀ, ਅਨਪੜ ਅਤੇ ਆਮਦਨ ਘੱਟ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਬਚਤ ਨਹੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ। ਸਾਰੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਲਈ ਕਰੋਨਾ ਮਹਾਂਮਾਰੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਊਦਾ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਮਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੁੰਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣ ‘ਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਦੇ ਡਰ, ਬਹੁਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਸਿਵਾਏ ਭੁੱਖਿਆਂ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੋਨ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਚਾਰਾ ਨਹੀ।
ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੈਫ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਮਦਦ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਵਧਾਇਆ। ਅਸੀਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਲੀਗਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਈਆਂ। ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਤਰੀਕ ਤੱਕ ਅਸੀਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੌਲ, ਦਾਲ, ਤੇਲ, ਹਲਦੀ,ਲੂਣ-ਮਿਰਚ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ 12 ਟਨ ਸਮਾਨ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

ਲੋਕਡਾਊਨ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇੰਨੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ‘ਤੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਸ਼ਨ ਵੰਡਣਾ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੀ ਚਣੌਤੀ ਸੀ, ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਸ਼ਨ ਵੰਡਣਾ ਵੀ ਜਰੂਰੀ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਨੇਪਰੇ ਚਾੜਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੱਦਦਗਾਰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਕਾਮ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੇਟ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਈ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀਆਂ ਭੁੱਖਮਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਗਈਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਥ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਿਹਾ।
