‘Through Pasroor, Guru Nanak reached Kotla and settled in a garden about a mile away from the town. Mian Mitha got an intuition of Guru Nanak’s arrival outside his town and told his followers: “Nanak is a good saint, but when he meets me I will remove him as the cream is removed from milk.” Baba Ji said (in reply to the telepathic communication:) “Mardana! Hear what Mitha is saying”. Mardana said, “He is your man. He will say what you wish him to say.” Guru Nanak told Mardana: “Mardana! When I meet Mitha: I shall squeeze out his juice like a lemon’. Mian Mitha got up (on this telepathic reaction) and said, “Let us move to pay our regards to Nanak.”

The followers said, “You had said earlier that Nanak will meet you and you will remove him as is the cream removed from the milk. (Now you want to go yourself to him)”. Mitha said, “I now got a call from him. He has said that he will squeeze juice out of me like a lemon. Nothing will be lost when the cream is taken out of milk but when the juice is taken out of lemon only refuse will be left.” Mian Mitha then went to where the Guru where was seated in the garden a mile away.’ [1]

This and many other examples of telepathy exist in Janamsakhis. The famous song of Sister Nanaki calling Baba Nanak to have the specially cooked loaf for him is very common among the village folk in Punjab.

The dictionary defines telepathy as ‘communication from one mind to another by extrasensory means. [2] ‘Telepathy is the direct communication of thoughts or feelings from one person to another without using speech or any other normal method.’ [3]

The term was coined in 1882 by the classical scholar Frederic W.H. Myers [4] a founder of the Society of Psychical research [5] and has remained more popular than the earlier expression thought-transference.[5] [6]

Telepathy is nothing unusual. There are times when you could be doing your regular chores around the house and all of a sudden you hear your inner voice telling you to phone your friend. The moment you hear his/her voice on the other end of the line, the person tells you he/she was just thinking of phoning you. Such is a simple example of telepathy. Both animals and humans are telepathic by nature, it’s simply that some people are not paying attention to the transmission and reception as that awareness requires putting aside one’s own self-thoughts and tuning into the other person. Children do this quite easily and see through the hypocrisy of adults by knowing their true thoughts even though they are not consciously thinking about it, all their “antennas” are open to receive and transmit on all frequencies.

Telepathy is a brain wave phenomenon. Our brain constantly emits waves as the neurons conduct electricity and electricity flowing through a conductor creates electromagnetic waves which travel at speed of light. Each person has their own unique waves that they emit, so when there is interaction of electromagnetic waves directed towards a person, the person gets what he needs to, it's like he gets the thought instantly or he clicks into things or he hears the voice in his or her head. So if the second person is getting or receiving what you want to tell him or her without any sound or talking or verbal communication then it's a successful telepathy! [7]

Systematic research work of this phenomenon began as early as 1882 in Britain. Researchers developed rather serious approach to solve the mystifying essence of telepathy. In 1926 director of Leningrad’s humanitarian society, Professor L.L. Vasyliev published a book entitled “Mystic phenomena of human psyche.” In it, the author describes several cases of the so-called spontaneous telepathy. Several attempts to register electromagnetic fields around a man’s head failed to yield any results. Vasyliev was unable to determine electromagnetic oscillations of live creatures due to the lack of ultra sensitive technology. Today, however, the existence of such waves has been confirmed. They do in fact exist. USSR's administration demonstrated tremendous interest in such phenomenon as telepathy. In mid 60s, according to “Komsomolskaya Pravda” (05.02.1999), a secret lab of academician Joseph Aideiman in USSR tried to prove scientifically the existence of telepathy. [8]

A scientifically validated demonstration of mind-to-mind communication in 2014 by Neuroscientist Carlos Grau of the University of Barcelona and colleagues is a game changer in this field. The experiment included picking up the signals of an Electroencephalagraph EEG from subjects in India which were transmitted over the Internet as email messages to other subjects in France whose scalps had been fitted with Trans Cranial Magnetic (TMS) stimulators. TMS devices, which have been used to treat anxiety and depression electrically, stimulate neural activity in the brain through intact scalps using strong magnetic fields. In this experiment, TMS stimulators were placed over the occipital (visual) cortex at the back of the brain, creating a perceived flash of light, called a phosphene, through neural activations in the visual cortex. The subjects in India were trained to generate an EEG signal representing either a one or a zero using a biofeedback monitor. A one was generated when subjects imagined moving a hand, while a zero was produced when subjects imagined moving a foot. These ones and zeros were then emailed from India to France, and routed to one of two TMS devices mounted on subjects’ scalps. Ones were routed to a TMS electrode that caused a phosphene to be perceived, while Zeros were routed to a different TMS device whose activity produced no phosphenes.

The figure above illustrates how the mind to mind communication path worked.

It is a kind of neurological Morse code. The researchers encoded a series of ones and zeros into words such as “hola” and “ciao,” showing that simple linguistic communication was possible.

The bottom line is that the experiment more or less worked. Error rates of transmission of ones and zeros varied between 1 and 11%, well below what would be expected by random noise. This is the birth of a revolutionary means of communication that is expected to transform our world in the way the telegraph, telephone, or television did. Someday, instead of texting, speaking or looking into a camera to communicate, we may simply “think” our message, saving all the bother of typing or speaking, or even getting out of the shower. Finally, if mind to mind communication proves practical, it’s possible that we will learn to communicate subtle ideas and nuances that text, speech and facial expressions cannot, forever changing the way humans relate to each other by amplifying and enriching the depth of communication. In Sri Guru Granth Sahib the most important aspect of ‘Naam Simran’ is clear example of telepathy. The individual while meditating on God is actually transmitting signals of love, attachment and devotedness towards God considering that the Lord is always watching and listening:

O my mind, do not think of the Lord as being far away; behold Him ever close at hand. He is always listening, and always watching over us; the Word of His Shabad is all-pervading everywhere. || 1 || (SGGS, M: 3, P.429) [12]

He watches, identifies and knows everything and is living both inside and outside.

It is with the belief that if one meditates on God all the problems will be solved and the evil will be dispelled:

Meditating on Naam one attains happiness and pleasure and the disease of worry is removed.

When a Sikh prays to God he has the hope in him that God listens to him:

His prayer goes further: You Yourself, O Creator, know everything; what can I possibly tell You? You know all the bad and the good; as we act, so are we rewarded. || 1 || O my Lord and Master, You alone know the state of my inner being. You know all the bad and the good; as it pleases You, so You make us speak. || 1 || (Soohee, Fourth Mehl, p. 735)

Only those are relieved from the circle of life of death who meditate on His Name; they became pure and reached the Highest place ( in Lord’s court).

Meditating on Naam is thus considered as a means to get salvation. Meditation on Naam is a live example of telepathy.
