TRENTON, NJ – The Sikh American Veterans Alliance (SAVA) congratulates Gurbir Singh Grewal on becoming the first Attorney General in New Jersey of South Asian descent. Moreover, Gurbir Singh Grewal will be the first Sikh Attorney General in U.S. history. Recently, New Jersey elected it’s first Sikh mayor in Hoboken, Ravi Singh Bhalla. Governor elect Murphy already has two Sikhs on his transition team, LTC Kamal Singh Kalsi and Balpreet Grewal-Virk.

Kalsi stated earlier today, “I’m proud to be a part of Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s transition team because he leads with his actions and his words. By appointing Gurbir Singh Grewal as the State’s Attorney General, he has uplifted a minority community that has suffered deeply from hate crimes, bullying and discrimination since 9/11. I see great things ahead for our state.”

During his press conference earlier today, Governor-elect Phil Murphy formally announced the appointment of Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Singh Grewal as the next Attorney General of New Jersey. Grewal will serve as the state’s chief law enforcement officer and a key partner to the Governor in upholding constitutional and civil rights, ensuring equal protection under the law, and building a stronger and Fairer New Jersey for all. Speaking about Grewal, Governor elect Murphy stated, “Our State needs someone with a steel backbone, who will not be afraid to stand up to President Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress to protect the rights and values of our State and of all 9 million of our residents.”

Grewal became a prosecutor to give back to a country that has given him and his family so much. A child of immigrants from India, Grewal grew up in New Jersey in Bergen and Essex counties. As a prosecutor and the chief law enforcement officer of New Jersey’s most populous county, Grewal oversees a staff of over 250 personnel and exercises supervisory authority over almost 3,000 law enforcement officials.

Grewal previously worked for six years as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, prosecuting major white-collar crimes, cybercrimes, cases of securities fraud, and Ponzi schemes. Before that, he prosecuted white collar crimes, narcotics offenses, and terrorism cases for the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Grewal graduated from Georgetown University and obtained his law degree from William and Mary. He is a past president of the South Asian Bar Association of New York. He currently lives in Bergen County with his wife and three daughters.

SAVA applauds the Governor elect’s choice for State Attorney General. “During our meetings with him and his team, he had promised the Sikh community a seat at the table. He promised that his cabinet would reflect the diversity of our State. He’s off to an amazing start.” said Dr. Kalsi, President of SAVA.
