Barrington Books to welcome Arun K. Singh, M.D. for a conversation and book signing for his memoir Your Heart, My Hands on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 5:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. at 176 Hillside Road, Cranston. Award-winning surgeon Dr. Arun K. Singh has witnessed life and death from a vantage point nearly unmatched in history. Your Heart, My Hands is an encouraging and inspiring true story on how a boy from India overcame a difficult childhood and devastating hand injuries and became one of the most preeminent cardiac surgeons in U.S. history.

Leaving a life marked by crippling setbacks and his father's doubt, in 1967 a twenty-something doctor from India arrived in America with only five dollars and the desire to claim his American dream. The journey still awaiting Dr. Arun K. Singh would be unparalleled. Faced with an entirely new culture, racism, and the lasting effects of disabling childhood injuries, through hard work and perseverance he overcame all odds. Now having performed over 15,000 open heart surgeries, more than nearly every surgeon in history, Dr. Singh reflects on his most memorable patients and his incredible personal life. Shared for the first time, these intimate and uplifting accounts, along with photos, will have you cheering for the underdog and appreciating the enduring determination of the human spirit.

Dr. Singh was trained at Columbia University, NYC, Brown University Medical School and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London and has practiced since 1975 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. There, Dr. Singh helped build a nationally-recognized cardiac surgery program. He has personally performed more than 15,000 documented heart surgeries and another 3,000 related procedures—a number virtually unsurpassed in the profession.

A professor of surgery at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, now Emeritus since 2016, he has published more than 150 scientific papers, authored many chapters in medical texts, and given lectures on heart disease and cardiac surgery to professional and lay audiences, both regionally and nationally. He is also an adjunct professor at Bryant University’s Physician Assistant Program.

As a physician, Dr. Singh has earned numerous awards, including the American Heart Association “Hero at Heart”; the Dr. Charles L. Hill Award from the Rhode Island Medical Society; the first recipient of Milton Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award and Lifetime Achievement award by Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Singh was also voted the state’s “Top Doc” in heart surgery for 20 years running, to name a few. Local politicians, congressional representatives and US senators have honored him with numerous citations. He was inducted into RI Heritage Hall of Fame in 2017.
